Riding Out a Stampede

Once I dropped in a box where they called a workout with many goats a ‘stampede’. I just learned today how appropriate that name was. Back from the New York trip I’m excited to have an indoor WOD for a change and real barbells… Knocking out more of the benchmarks this month with Randy today. A sneaky one… 75lbs for snatch. Should be easy. 75 times. Hmm.

Yoga, Food and the Art of Ignorance

As I invited some friends into the world of CrossFit this week in New York, many asked why they had never heard of the sport. It has been around a decade, it is arguably cutting edge, produces superior and measurable results… Then I was reminded by the same friend that Yoga had been around thousands of years and I myself was just learning it. So touché.
It is true, that we humans have a strange way to resist facts and change. Even if the results stare us in the face. I was at an investor event this week and met a guy from Vanguard, the mutual fund company, who reminded me that index investing took 25 years of ridicule before becoming mainstream with a fund sizes now over a trillion dollars. Same is true for sugar. Most paleo books point to research of over 100 years that point out the problems with sugar, yet there is an unstoppable surge of low-fat, no-fat yogurt places across the country. All selling massive doses of sugar with various health claims.
What is my point? Here it is. There are certain things in life we ourselves have to learn and drive. This includes our health, fitness and money. Noone will have our best interest in mind except ourselves. Stop handing your life over to your globo-gym, broker or some health fad. Let’s wake up to this fact finally and grab that weight, stretch that back, throw out that sugar and put that money in an index fund.  Noone else will do it for us.

Triple Triple WOD

This week’s ad hoc Central Park CrossFit team dwindled from an optimistic 7 Tuesday to a hardened 3 by today. A combination of thunderstorms and granite boulders seem to do that to you… I had a chance to party last night on the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange. What a great experience. Therefore for most of us the workout was on less than 5 hours of sleep. And for one of us on 2…

WOD 1 – Warmup to Death
Every minute on the minute 1, 2, 3… reps of the following until you run out of time:
– pushups
– situps
– squats
556 reps – 18 rounds+43
WOD 2 – Chase the Birds
50-40-30-20-10
– 10m shuttle run
– kettle bell swings
– jump ropes
[13;25]
WOD 3 – Storm the Hill
3 rounds- not for time (forgot to time this)
– climb granite boulder with a kettlebell
– descend to starting point
– 5 Burpees

Tabata Storm in the Park

Our newly minted corporate CrossFit team had another early day in Central Park, this time in much more favorable weather and without the distraction of the traffic barricades due to the UN Summit yesterday. As the newcomers get more comfortable being on the clock it was time to introduce them to our favorite fitness invention from Japan: Tabatas…

Mugging Gone Bad

We had our team in Central Park at 6am despite pouring rain today. Most of the guys were new to CrossFit which made this WOD more fun. In the Park there are many granite hills 50-100 feet high and we decided to make one of them our training partner…
WarmUp
– Shuttle runs and burpees
Team WOD ” Mugging Gone Bad”
In Central Park on the boulder near the 7th Avenue entrance
In teams of 3-4 rotate through the following stations, similar to Fight Gone Bad. While one person runs the others do one of the stations then rotate:
– Storm the Hill – 200m run up the granite boulder
– Kettlebell swings
– Box jumps
– jump rope
[610 reps – highest in team 640, lowest around 460]
