Pullup bars in Venice…

I have found the following candidates for pull-up bars in the great city of Venezia… As for trees, most trees are ancient with branches the size of my thighs…

Day 14 of 42 – WOD Venice

After a good beach week we’re heading off to Venice. I checked and double checked. No Crossfit affiliate here, well not even a well equipped gym. I will be on a mission to make the best of the natural landscape for bodyweight exercises…

WOD

10 rounds for time of:

– 40 meters walking lunges
– 10 push-ups (ground to lockout)

TIME: 15:45

Something about these lunges just keep sneaking up on me…

Cash-out

3 hours of aimless strolling in this great city.

Day 13 of 42 – Crossfit Games WOD

Inspired by the theme of the Games’ first event (beach) I felt obliged to do the WOD on the beach here.

Slight mods were needed for two reasons: 1) there is absolutely no sand on this island only pebbles and 2) there is no pullup bar whatsoever anywhere. So about half the run was in deep pebbles which arguable are tougher to run on than sand (think gravel mixed with quicksand). The run ended up being 3400m per google maps. Also finding a suitable tree branch in the Mediterranean forced me in the field of botany. Many indigenous trees like olive and fig wouldn’t hold a big bird let alone a kipping 165 pounds. Finally I found an oaktree above a picnic bench. I changed the sequence to have the final run segment on the beach before doing the pullups just because the oak tree was 5 minutes from the beach… By the way, kipping on a tree is quite an experience because you’re bound to hit your head on other branches especially trying to get really high up for the chest pullups…

All of this in pouring rain…

WOD

– 210m ocean swim (the ocean was awesome in the morning)
– 1700m beach run (pebbles / dirt)
– 100 hands free pushups  (chest in pools of rain)
– 200 air squats (ouch!)
– 1700m beach run (pebbles / dirt)
– 50 pullup to chest (on a tree)

TIME: 47:45

What a fun experience!!! Too bad I can’t do handstand walk to replicate the skills 1 session of Day 1…

Watching Crossfit Games at low speed

I settled in next to the hotel pool and locked in on the Crossfit Games “reruns”. There is no hope of watching the live events partly because of the 9-hour time difference and also because this beach town decided to give all visitors free wifi access. While that’s a wonderful thing the resulting speed makes 1980s modems seem like speed machines…

What an amazing sport we have!!! The expectation for the next workout assignment, energy it takes to get through them and the support of the fan and the judges is awesome. In fact, I can’t recall any other sport where the referees or judges are pulling so hard for you. This also makes this sport unique.

Day 12 of 42 – WOD Croatia

Yesterday’s rest helped a lot with my heel challenges. Went to the beach early morning with a kettlebell in hand and a WOD was born… (I found a gym shop back in Hungary willing to cut me a deal on some overstock dumbbells and a kettlebell for the trip).

Warm up
– 400 m run on the beach pebbles
– plyometric pushups
– bench dips

WOD
5 rounds for time:
– 10 bench jump (~22in)
– 20 kettlebell swings (16kg)

SCORE: 7:41

Cash Out
3×400 run on the beach.

Good hiking day on Cres Island to get a real warm down…
