12 Days of Xmas – Day 8: “Mogul”

The snow finally started in Vail Valley and by afternoon the resort started opening up their double diamond sections. What a welcome change from the morning ice-skiing to the afternoon powder, albeit with some vegetation still sticking out in the snow…
I had a couple of great mogul runs with my daughters and by the end of the day we could finally say it was worth it to come skiing this year. If I treated the mogul runs as a workout, I think it would be like 500 half-squats, 250 tuck jumps and 500 yard farmers carry with 2 sets of skis… In the evening I did manage a quick WOD for good measure.

WOD
As many reps as possible in 2×2 minutes:
– shoulder press 45lbs
– bench press 45lbs
SCORE: 81 shoulder presses + 85 bench presses = 166

12 Days of Xmas – Day 7: “Ice”

East Coast skiing at West Coast prices… so far that sums up the experience in Colorado and as I heard also in Utah. At least we have more snow than Europe judging from the endless stream of European tourists showing up in Vail Valley this week. They’d better spend their Euros before that money goes bad… The gym in the Beaver Creek Lodge is really just a glorified mudroom for the pool area, so bodyweight training will be the norm this holiday.

WOD
First:
– 100 double unders
TIME: 5:30
Second:
As many reps as possible in 4 minutes (break up sets as needed):
– max pushups / max situps
SCORE: 100 pushups and 64 situps

12 Days of Xmas – Day 6: “Beaver”

Our first day of skiing/snowboarding on Beaver Creek was fun and also a lot of work as the air was thin, the snow icy and we were all tired from yesterday’s trip. With EpicMix built into the ski passes, we now get to track every run, our total elevation change and area covered. By the 9th run my legs were jello as if I had just done 500 squats, so after the mountain the real WOD had to be anything but legs…

WOD
4 rounds for time:
– 25 pushups
– 25 bench dips
– 25 situps
TIME: 8:40

Half the mountain is still closed...

12 Days of Xmas – Day 5: “Maxine”

As the family is packing for the skiing/snowboarding trip to Beaver Creek I managed to squeeze in 8 minutes of intensity… Named after “Max” in Maxine.

WOD “Maxine”
2 minutes max reps each of the following. No rest in-between.
– pullups – 47 – PR
– situps – 70 – PR
– air squats – 80 – PR
– pushups  – 97  – PR
SCORE:  294   Rx

12 Days of Xmas – Day 4: “Vivien”

My 8-year old daughter and fellow Crossfitter decided to help me design today’s WOD. We created two packs of cards with common CF movements and time/rep combinations (like AMRAP, 21-15-9, etc). She pulled 4 cards for a four-exercise combo: pull-ups, pushups, thrusters and 400m run. The time became AMRAP in 20 minutes. So this is how we now have a Vivien benchmark WOD at least at our house.

WOD “Vivien”
As many rounds as possible in 20 minutes.
Count total reps for each movement
– max pullups  (56)
– max pushups  (108)
– max thrusters 75lbs   (28)
– 400m run
SCORE: 192 total reps in 4 rounds
