The Magic of CrossFit Travel

Crossfit is not a franchise which is what makes it the fastest growing sport in the world. It also means that coaches in every gym constantly develop their own methods, insights and techniques with a single goal in mind: improving performance.
One of the reasons I love visiting different boxes on my travels is that beyond meeting new people I constantly learn new things to get better at a lift, movement or in the mental game of the sport. I improved double unders when I visited CrossFit Balance in D.C.,  London helped my kettlebells, Central London took muscle-ups to the next level, Hong Kong fixed my rowing, Palo Alto taught me the greatest warm-up and this week CF NOLA improved my overhead squat by 30% in 15 minutes.
Everyone should visit other boxes even if it is across town or work with different coaches in their own gyms. The rewards are new perspectives and sometime that magical pointer you need to move from 95 lbs to 125 lbs in overhead as I did today in New Orleans…
A cool extra was riding the Street Cars back and forth from Canal Street to the box.

Warm-up
– Find your max double unders in 5 minutes  (12)
2 Rounds:
– Farmers Carry 400m – 2×55 lbs

WOD
Overhead Squats 3-3-3-3-3    (125lbs – PR)
I moved my max from 95 to 125 lbs by doing shoulder and quad mobility stretches between sets. Instant magic.

Jazz and WOD

I have not been back to New Orleans since Katrina – and Canal and Bourbon streets are back to their old charms and music. I forgot how friendly people are down here….
For the next 3 days we’re here for a conference and I made the first evening count by skipping the Hurricanes, Po’Boys and Gumbos and headed over to CrossFit NOLA for something equally punishing. This gym has some badass programming…. Loved it. Back for more tomorrow…

WOD
(3 minutes between 2 parts)

Part 1
– As many double unders as possible in 10 minutes
– first run 1,200 meters and do the double unders in the remaining time
SCORE: 77 double unders

Part 2  “Death by Pullups”
Every minute increase the number of pull-ups
e.g. 1st minute 1 pullup, 2nd min: 2, 3rd min:3 and so on until you can’t do more in a minute
SCORE: 14 minutes  (105 total pullups)

WOD with Kandahar CrossFit

This may be my most memorable WOD yet. Today CF KOP organized a workout of global proportions. We connected our gym via Skype to Kandahar CrossFit in Afghanistan for a joint Hero Workout. We were joined by dozens of kids from Steve’s Club – an amazing organization bringing fitness to inner-city youth. All in all close to a hundred of us from two continents set out for 20 minutes of web-enabled celebration of fitness. We also sent -per their request – a most needed set of supplies to the soldiers after the workout: gym chalk….

HERO WOD “Jack”
As many rounds as possible in 20 minutes:
– 10 push presses (115lbs)
– 10 kettlebell swings (55lbs)
– 10 box jumps (24″)
SCORE:  6 rounds @ 95 lbs

Tabatas and Freebord

You can do anything for 20 seconds… That’s how Tabatas lure you in to their lair to teach you a lesson. To be fair, it is one of my favorites… I also finally dug out my Freebord to snowboard on asphalt now that this season gives us very little snow. More about that soon…

WOD “Tabata This”
5 rounds of 20/10sec Tabatas. Only the lowest score of each set counts.
– Rowing (calories)
– Air squats (reps)
– Pullups (reps)
– Pushups (reps)
– Situps (reps)
SCORE: 44

Reebok CrossFit Commercial is out

Reebok quietly launched a dedicated website and a new commercial for CrossFit.

Celebrated the rest day with some snatches, handstand pushups (always need more range of motion), double unders and watching TV with my girls…
