Manmaker Day and Double Unders

I was packing for my Asia trip which basically revolves around making room in the carry-on bag for more than just jump ropes and WOD gear… Created my extreme bodyweight programming because there will not be time for drop-ins on this trip. Judging from the movements some travel WODs can put benchmark workouts to shame. Took advantage of the weights while I have them for today’s gig.

Skill
Muscle ups, handstand pushups
Strength
Wendler Shoulder Press 3/3/3+ [115+]
3×15 Kettlebell swings 40#
Conditioning
5 rounds of:
– 10 manmakers 35# dumbbells
– 10 double unders
[TIME: 7:11]

Lynne Came to Visit

Benchmark workouts are always a great occasion and my club schedules them every week. Today we had Lynne which reminded me never to joke about traditional gym rats doing benches for hours. Maybe I can learn a thing or two…
Heading off to 3 weeks of travel again, which is a chance again to drop in on a couple of favorite and some new boxes along the way. I predict that half the conversations will be about who can possibly beat Froning in the Games. My money is on Rich.

Benchmark WOD “Lynne”
5 rounds not for time:
– bodyweight bench presses
– max pullups
[SCORE: 118 Rx]

Crowded Gyms and Mobility Days

I noticed that clubs are increasingly getting full. There may be a lot of discussions about the influx of L1 certified trainers in the market but I also noted more and more gyms are just packed. There are 4 clubs within a 5-mile radius in Virginia that no longer accept members and more and more gyms are rejecting drop-ins as there is simply no more room. When we see boxes with hundreds of members getting sold out, either the days of the small garage gyms are numbered or better yet, more and more boxes are needed. Either way the sport will get better and our open source of fitness will develop some new and more amazing tools.

I renamed my Rest Days to Mobility Days to remind me of the importance of getting the limbs and muscles back in top shape especially after a 6-day string of WODs… This also forces me to standardize my stretch / mobility routine by adopting the best from MobilityWOD and some of te more warm-up centric gyms I’ve seen in my travels: shoulder dislocates, yoga stretches, rubber band shoulder and leg stretches, skin the cats, Burgener warmup, etc. Maybe even my Tony Horton DVDs like Yoga X or Stretch X can have an afterlife on rest days… I like CrossFit Charlottesville Mobility Program and I’m working on a similar routine.

Burpeed Out

What I love about the sport is that there are absolutely no excuses for lack of time. If you only have 5 minutes you can do 50 burpees, in 10 minutes 100 pushups, 100 sit-ups and 100 squats. In fact while I rarely run into anyone crazy about burpees, they may be the ultimate instant workout. You have legs, arms, core, balance in one and yes, they will wear you out quickly. You practically need no space to do it. So we did many today in that spirit at CFDV.

Skill
– Burpees!! – tip: jump up with really wide feet from pushup…
Strength
– Back Squat 3×5 (in lieu of Wendler 3/3/3 today) – 205lbs+
– 3×10 landmine rows – 75lbs
Conditioning
2 rounds:
– 1 minute AMRAP dumbbell push presses 35 lbs
– 1 minute plank or situps
– 1 minute AMRAP dumbbell cleans 35 lbs
– 1 minute plank or situps
– 1 minute AMRAP burpees!!
– 1 minute plank or situps
[SCORE: 118 with sit-ups]
