Countdown to Sandy

Today was occasionally sunny and warm with no sign of the impending doom of the double storm coming our way. Not that I will know as I plan to be on the other side of the Atlantic when Canada’s jet stream collides with the tropical storm somewhere in the East…

Emergency is a great lesson in Paleo living: it seems people stock up primarily on carbs. As a friend pointed out: STRESSED spelled backwards is DESSERTS.
My daughter and I went for our version of the storm shelter, our basement gym for a proper countdown to Sandy.

Hurricane and Frankenstorm

It seems the entire East Coast is entering the annual weather crisis. The only form it really takes here is some rain, occasional flooding and the average shopper buying 6-months worth of food. Most residents could easily survive the zombie armageddon judging by their grocery carts…

With all the news about Hurricane Sandy all I could think about is why there was no benchmark WOD named Sandy yet. I’m sure the community will right this wrong soon…

Should We Stay Mediocre?

Interesting how a blog post in the New York Times about why women can’t do pull-ups stirred up so much noise in the Crossfit world. I actually started CF in a box run by a female gymnast, so even the premise seems silly and all the science quoted in the blog just encourages women to not even try. My 9-year old daughter is getting close to her full pull-up just like tens of thousands of gymnasts, crossfitters and other female athletes already did. Let’s not give them science on why they are wrong.

On this rest day I was doing some stretching and mobility, hoping the Times won’t tell me that men are inherently inflexible and should not even try this.

Winter is Coming

Hard to believe it is almost winter with temperatures in the 80s today.. As we move more indoors, the strength focus of November and heavy metcons in December and January will definitely keep us busy. I’m already trying to figure out the optimal MetCon regime to pair with the 10 days of snowboarding in December… Light on the legs, I think…

Preparing for Extended Travel

Travel does not have to mess up our training schedules. Especially nowadays when the world has 5,000 CF boxes and fortunately many hotels now have an amazing array of functional equipment, like Olympic bars, kettlebells, pull-up bars. I’m working on compiling a list of hotels with functional fitness oriented hotel stuff from the Marriott Marquis, through China World to Hilton CDG or Club Med Paris. The minimum IQ test for admission is a barbell, pull-up bar and enough space in-between the useless machines for gymnastics and double unders…

For my UK/Asia trip I connected with CF gyms in all the cities I’m visiting. Some places do not have a box yet, but I found some gym owners who love CrossFit and have all the necessary equipment and are happy to see me drop those barbells… A little planning goes a very long way when it comes to beating the lazy virus… And those excuses that come with it…
