Traveling with Santa

Well, not quite, but I got closer to the North Pole than planned. My flight from Tokyo to Paris got cancelled and I jumped on a flight to Helsinki, Finland… Yes, it is very cold there in January… Super nice people, though.

After 2 hours I am again off to Barcelona to our regional sales meeting.
The only exercise on a long plane ride is very limited stretching as the aisles and fellow passengers allow…

By the evening, I hope to be compensated with a night walk along the Mediterranean before giving in to the jet-lag gods…

Shrine to a Frozen Metropolis

In any culture, locals sharing with us the sacred is very special. We had a guide today in Tokyo that taught us the Shinto sacred ceremony of entering his favorite shrine (called omiori). We also got to witness a shinto wedding and various other rites.
Being able to immerse in a culture for me involves sharing what locals love (great food and very strange sweets), their rituals and overwhelming attention to detail in all walks of life…
I had a great run on the Imperial Palace grounds, which are mostly closed to the public except a small garden, but there were hundreds of runners defying the cold Saturday morning along with me.

Food and WOD in the Real Tokyo

For the largest metropolis in the world, Tokyo seems very quiet. None of the crazy bustling of Chinese or Indian cities and the streets in the financial district at noon barely have any cars compared to London or New York.
The evenings get more vibrant in the fun parts of town like Roppongi and Ginza, where we are staying. Still, very subdued by any standard. Until you enter one of the local restaurants, that is. The best ones almost never have tourists, their english menus are not much easier to decipher that the Japanese ones. The the fish and veggies are simply beyond anything I’ve ever eaten…

Imperial Mood

A full day of investor meetings can be both energizing and overwhelming. Doing these meetings overlooking the calm Imperial Palace in Tokyo in a sparking winter day makes it magical.
Being in Japan, I’m constantly reminded how efficient, polite and clean the world can get… Japan may not have a contender for quite a while in those categories. And food quality. Superb.
Finding a good gym in Ginza was another matter, so the super helpful staff of my hotel helped rearrange their equipment for me to make the best of it..

Tropics to Snowstorm

The distances in Asia can be overwhelming. Travelled from Singapore to Tokyo and that meant to go from tropical morning to a snowstorm.
We were well compensated by some of the nicest and most polite people you’d ever meet. Plus staying in Ginza, dinners will be some of the best on Earth. The gyms, unfortunately, are non-existent…
