Should we have a CrossFit Handicap Index?

One of the attractions of golf is the handicap system that allows novices, pros and all in-between to play a good game and be measured against their own best effort.
This allows for beginners to beat the best on a good day and in general challenge each of them on their own terms…
As the CrossFit World expands vastly to cover all athletic abilities, maybe there will be time for a similar index based on a CF standard: work output or power.

The recent announcement of CFHQ on their comprehensive ranking system will help select the top CF athletes for a competition. It will not help compare two WOD results between athletes of very different abilities, like an index could.

There are dozens of CF calculators that can measure the power of our recent WODs in watts, horsepower or ft-lb/sec. It is not inconceivable to set out the next Throwdown with average power output over a period as our baseline handicap index.
Then we can have real comparison of work output…
A 175lb 5’9 athlete doing Fran at 4:00 has the same power output as a 190lb 6’1 athlete doing the same at 4:30 (around 215 watts). Their own best should be the baseline. Improvements before and after can then be easily calculated using tools like the Catalyst power output calculator and make it comparable.

Forget Nicole

Benchmark girls are sacred and scary workouts that make our brains go mush.
If we say, let’s do some weights and pull-ups, people say fine. If we say ‘Fran’ all neurons freeze up. So today it wasn’t Nicole at all. It was 12 minutes of something eerily similar…
Strength
– 4 rounds of 8 unbroken push presses [145]
MetCon “Forget Nicole”
AMRAP 12 minutes for total pull-ups
– 400m run
– max unbroken pull-ups

Bad Medicine (Ball)

It has been over a year since the last full workout with Medballs and I’m glad they are back. There is something uniquely painful about these soft, heavy objects being attached to you for more than 10 minutes… In the spirit of functional fitness though, the awkward size and shape of these compared to a dumbbell makes workouts twice the fun.
Just wait until we bring out the Atlas stones again….
Strength
Back Squat 5×5 @ 205
MetCon
2 rounds
– 40 medball cleans @ 20 lbs
– 30 medball sit-ups
– 20 medball pushups
– 10 medball pullups

Goats that once were

Today’s WOD called for almost 150 double unders. I remember 9 months ago that would have kep me out of the gym as I was doing them 2-3 at a time… Nowadays 30-40 is easily unbroken and 70 was last month. What a difference 3 quarters make!!
I wish CF was more part of overall skill and conditioning in high school sports where conditioning almost always means endless and mindless running….
Since before 13.2 my hamstring started acting up and I’m trying to find the best cure for it. It turns out that 84 deadlifts is not…
MetCon
7 rounds for time:
– 12 deadlifts @ 225lbs
– 400m run
– 21 unbroken double unders

Resting with Kettlebells

In the spirit of an active rest day, I visited Coach Chris’ kettlebell club at CFDV.
It was great to take a break from high intensity especially after yesterday’s tests and this fit the bill perfectly. Even if 100 reps of 72lb kettlebell swings eventually gets to you…
The afternoon started with CF Kids and my older daughter PR’d her C&J.
KB Routine 1
– 5 x 5 reps of double kettlebell presses @ 2 x 35 lbs
– 2 minute rest in-between rounds
KB Routine 2
– 10 x 10 kettlebell swings @ 72 lbs
– 90 seconds rest in-between rounds
